Back to my roots...

I noticed that I've been using store-bought fleece a lot to make my monsters (although I usually try to only buy the remnant pieces in the 50% off bin at Joann's). But I have bins and bins of socks and clothes that I've saved to make monsters with...so I've been trying to get back to my original plush-making roots lately by repurposing those socks & clothing to make my monsters...

This guy is from an old fleece I had lying around. One of my favorite things is making pocket mouths...especially with zippers!



This gal is a pretty simple monster. My favorite part about her is her long hair. I envision her as an eccentric, hippie art teacher. All she's missing is a long funky necklace and tie-dye.

(Sorry if the pictures are a little blurry. I was trying to snap some quick pictures of these two monsters before the craft show tomorrow in case they sell. I need to set up a photo shoot area again in my craft room with decent lighting and a tripod for the camera. )

Christmassy Sock Monsters

I've had some mismatched Christmas toesocks that I've been meaning to make monsters out of, but had been putting it off until the Christmas season...

I love that green button! It's my last one...which is mostly the reason he has only one eye! None of my other green buttons worked as well as this one, and I didn't have any other buttons that went with it. That's the beauty of making monsters...you can get away with giving them only one eye!

Monsters with Pigtails

Two firsts...both including pigtails. First of all, the first Galliwumpf with pigtails!


Next...the first Nubbin with pigtails (and eyelashes)!

Elder Galliwumpfs

I both love and loathe when I make a monster I think is so adorable, that it's hard to part with. I REALLY like this little guy!

It looks like he's got a big fuzzy beard. I sewed him in the Galliwumpf style (if you have no idea what a Galliwumpf is...click here)...but with a slight difference that results in that moustache look. I've decided to call him an Elder Galliwumpf.

I was originally thinking that the moustache part would be a lip from which the purple tongue is prodruding. But once I sewed it up...I think it looks like he has a beard and moustache. What do you think?

And here's another Elder Galliwumpf! But this one is like the fun, crazy uncle of the Galliwumpf family! The other Elder Galliwumpfs are always telling him to grow up, but the younger Galliwumpfs think he's the coolest ever!

I love how the double buttons on one eye make him look crazy!

Berslymp the Sock Monster

Meet Berslymp...

I haven't developed a personality/backstory for Berslymp yet. My creativity feels sapped right now in the storytelling/personality-creating department. Little help? Any ideas? Leave me a comment at my blog post here! Not an official contest or anything...just help a monstermaking girl out!

Trilli the Sock Monster

Meet Trilli...

"Trilli wants to be a hairstylist when she grows up. But she just can't seem to pass beauty school. Every person's hair she dyes turns out green! Trilli doesn't know what the big deal is...everyone loves green hair right?"

I love the pink & green color combination! Not a typical color combo I would love...but for a monster, I think it works very well. It has a certain girly appeal. I think pink & green is the hip chick's pink & purple. And I gave her the same cornrow style hair as Zogra...so her hair is very play-able. I can see some 'tween girl absolutely loving her.

Newest Sock Monsters (belated February edition)

I realized recently that in my attempts to keep up with the demand for the Nubbins, I haven't made any new Sock Monsters to replace the ones that have been sold...and my Sock Monster population has gotten pretty low. So I tried to make a point of making a few new Sock Monsters last week (in addition to more Nubbins)

This is the Striped Galliwumpf...The Striped Galliwumpf is a relative of the Spotted Galliwumpf. This particular one prefers to be called George. George considers himself to be quite the intellectual. He wants to be his own monster and does not want to be defined by his species and just lumped in with all the other Galliwumpfs. But most of the other Galliwumpfs just think he's being a snob.

I decided this one gets my recent Give-Away winner's captcha name "Zogra". She looks very Amazon-ish to me. I love her hair. It kind of looks like cornrows. Normally all my monster hair ends up being pigtails, so I liked that I figured out this technique that makes the hair turn out a little different.

This little one never got the chance to be named, since she was snapped up at the "First & Last: Arts & Crafts" show this past weekend. The little girl that picked her out had a very hard time choosing which monster she wanted. For a while, her final choices were between this one and Zogra...but she ultimately went with the pink pigtailed monster.

The Spotted Galliwumpf

I made this monster last Saturday afternoon and finished her up while I was at the art show. She's made from clean, recycled socks. I love her fuzzy belly! This is the Spotted Galliwumpf (or Gally, as she prefers to be called). She LOVES buttons!...she thinks they're delicious! If you're missing a button, Gally probably ate it. She'd better not find out that she has buttons for eyes...or she'll probably eat those too!

I'm putting Gally up for sale in my shop. But I think she's another one of my favorite monsters that's going to be hard to part with!
